Historical Note: |
Jesuit missionaries established a settlement on Quinchao in 1702 in order to evangelise amongst the Chonos people of Chaulinec and Apiao. In addition to their spiritual wellbeing the Jesuits were also very concerned to encourage cultural and social development amongst the people they encountered. The first mission was on Chequián. Later on (in 1754) this was transferred to Achao were there had been a settlement since 1690.
There had been a religious presence in Chiloé since the Spanish settlement of 1567 but it was with the Jesuits that the work of evangelism amongst the indigenous people truly began. This was called the circular mission because it involved a circuit of the whole archipelago, conducted by sea, each summer.
