In 1925 Achao had 1,080 inhabitants, 30 blocks, a post office, telegraph, civil registry, customs and two public schools. The town is noted for the architecture of its houses with attractive passages, picture windows, balconies and different styles of shingles. The church, built in 1730, is the oldest wooden building in Chiloé and was recently declared a World Heritage Site and has been a National Monument since 1951.
