The positioning of the church and its relationship with the activity of the port, was unlike that of most other churches in Chiloé. Those were constructed in high places, with views of the ocean as well as of the landscape acknowledging the part played in the parishioner?s lives by both. In Quemchi the town developed from the port and it was there that the first church was built in 1875.
The fire of 1934 marked an important milestone in the urban development of Quemchi. New buildings replaced the old, but they were much less elaborate. When rebuilt, the church was much smaller and reflected the declining fortunes of the town. The Second World War and other setbacks saw the eclipse of Quemchi that had once been a small, but significant port.
