Historical notes: |
In 1824 the Chilotes foiled an attempted invasion of the island by General Ramón Freire. The Chilean troops planned to attack Ancud from the rear but at the battle of the plains of Mocopulli on 21st January they were forced to retreat.
By mid century Dalcahue was a prosperous town. Boats of up to 100 tons were under construction and the cultivation of shellfish was important. Aureliano Oyarzún Navarro, one of Dalcahue's most notable citizens was born on 16th June 1858. Navarro became one of the countries' foremost authorities in the field of ethnography. He also fought in the War of the Pacific and entered Lima with the Chilean army. By the end of the century, with its new church, Dalcahue had become a religious centre. In 1928 the second mechanised sawmill in all of South America was installed here. From then on the thick coastal forest started to disappear.
