Chonchi is an excellent departure point for several interesting tours. In one day it is possible to visit the Chiloé National Park or the rural areas of Quiao and Los Petanes in the Piuche Hills or to visit nearby areas such as Quellon, Queilen and Lemuy.

A visit to the town should start with the church of San Carlos de Borromeo (UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Monument). Continue along Calle Centenario, admiring the old buildings, to the Museo de las Tradiciones, a home decorated in Chilote style from the early 20th century. Visit the waterfront of this active port, passing by the new market building, not forgetting to sample the traditional "roscas chonchinas" and the "licor de oro". Ascend to P. Aguirre Cerda turning left towards the cemetery. Returning, go by Janequeo and turn to the right down Calle O?Higgins to reach the church. |

Take the Pan-American Highway towards Castro, visiting the church at Vilupulli (World Heritage Site and a National Monument) which lies on the right 2km along the way. A further 3 km along the sealed road turn again, towards the sea, in order to view the curious little island of Quinched, go down the lane on your right to the lagoon and to the right there is a track leading to the ancient Fort Tauco.
Going back to the lagoon take the turn left turn towards the hamlet of Rauco where the road runs along the seashore giving an excellent view of the waterway leading to Castro. At the end of the sealed section turn left to the lookout point. A few meters to the right climb the path to the Mirador de Nalhuitad that gives a panorama of channels, islands and fjords with the Cordillera de Los Andes as backdrop. The road continues to the rural areas of Alcaldeo y Canan.

From Chonchi take the Pan-American going south, turn right after 4 km onto the gravel road bordering Lakes Huillinco and Cucao and finishing at the Pacific. Visit the village of Huillinco with its pretty cemetery and jetty from which launches run to Cucao.
Once in the Park we suggest that you walk the "El Tepual" track that runs through a typical section of the indigenous forest. Later, if time permits, walk the track along the Pacific shore where CONAF is working to preserve the area's sand dunes.

Suggestions: Fill up at Chonchi and watch out for trucks on the roads.

50 meters south of the Chonchi junction turn to the right along a gravel road, heading towards the foothills of the coastal range. You will reach the river Notué, go up to the visitor centre, where there is a panorama of the lake, the Cordillera de los Andes and its volcanoes. You will end up at Lake Huillinco where there are walking tracks through groves of native trees such as the Canelo, Arrayán, Luma, Tineo, Coihue and Maitenes.
