Starting at the Plaza de Armas, visit the Museo Regional in Calle Esmeralda, and then the Church of San Francisco (World Heritage Site and a National Monument). Continue along Calle San Martín and turn right on Sotomayor, which at its end has steps leading down to the waterfront (if going by car turn left on Calle Serrano and left again to the waterfront). Then turn left on Calle Pedro Montt towards the Palafitos, built over the water. Now continue across the main road and along the second part of Pedro Montt until you reach the main road once again (it carries on around the Ten-Tén peninsula). Go up Calle O'Higgins to the traffic lights, turn onto Calle Galvarino Riveros, and follow the signs to the Feria Campesina, the produce market where campesinos and fishermen sell their goods. Follow Calle Galvarino Riveros on to Museo de Arte Moderno, which is located next to the Parque municipal. On the return, turn right into Calle Ramón Freire and past Mirador de Gamboa. Descend by Calle Portales and Chacabuco; turn right onto Thompson and finish up at the Mercado Artesanal, the craft market. |

Leave Castro on Calle San Martín, towards the north. After passing a service station, turn to the right on a gravel road that goes to Península Ten-Tén. Drive along the waterfront, with a panoramic view of the Palafitos and Castro, until you come to a small, attractive, beach. The road winds up through the countryside to the Mirador, a lookout, with a view of Cordillera de los Andes and all of Castro, its estuary, suburbs and surrounding countryside. |

Start with a visit to Iglesia de San Francisco in Castro (World Heritage Site and a National Monument) and admire the Chilote craftsmanship in wood an architectural dream by Eduardo Provasoli, originally designed to be built in stone. Next drive to the chapel at Llau Llau. Head north on the Pan-American for 2 km where a sign to the right marks the road to Rilán. This dirt road goes past Putemún. Turn right at Payán to view Castro and visit Yutuy, La Estancia and finally Rilán village with its big church.
Return directly to Payán, backtrack to Castro and continue south for 4 km. To the right lays the church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia, Nercón, dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Ask for Doña Oravia Carcoma, who has the keys for the church. On the return trip, be sure to visit the traditional boat yards by the waterfront in the approaches to Castro.

At the bottom of Calle Blanco in Castro, at the wharf, there are small boats offering various tours of the inlet, giving views of Castro, the Palafitos, the residential section of Nercón, traditional boatyards, salmon farms and the harbour buoy that is home to sea lions. One can step off and walk around the village of Yutuy on Ten-Tén peninsula. Launches visit Putemún Bay, which every winter is painted pink by the arrival of hundreds of flamencos. |

10 km north of Castro, turn to the left on a dirt road. After 2 km the road goes over a bridge, and continues without turning, for another km. Turn left on the road that leads to the small, attractive Laguna Pastahúe. This lake is much frequented by locals in the summer. The road continues further to ideal picnic spots along the shores of the river. |

From the wharf at the bottom of Calle Blanco in Castro you can take a ferry to Chelin and Isla Quehui. The trip goes down Castro estuary and passes between Isla Lemuy on one side and the Rilán peninsula on the other. The trip lasts 2 hours and provides magnificent views of the islands and the distant Cordillera de los Andes. Chelín has a world heritage church and panoramic views of the surrounding islands. Quehui Bay is well protected and good for swimming or simply meditating or walking. On the return trip, we suggest a stop in Chonchi, to the south of Castro estuary.
