| In 1643, Santiago de Castro only had a dozen buildings, including the churches of la Merced, the Padres de la Compañía and the Mayor (Franciscan). By 1768 Castro had the most dignified and elegant clerical buildings in the province. In 1613 it had a main church, a convent and a Jesuit church. The Compaña convent was the biggest building in the town and was constructed with adobe walls and slate tiles and occupied half a block (each block in Castro was 125 square meters). With its earthquakes and fires, Castro lost and rebuilt most of its houses, churches and convents many times over. |
