Starting at the Plaza de Armas visit the cathedral and regional museum. Go down to the waterfront and Wharf to visit the market. Climb Calle Baquedano to Calle San Antonio where Fort San Antonio is on the left-hand side. Return to Calle Baquedano and continue the ascent as far as the polvorin (magazine) of Fort San Antonio. Now visit Balneario Arena Gruesa, in this area there is an amphitheatre where many cultural and artistic events take place in summer. Make your way back along Calle Baquedano as far as Antonio Burr where a turn to the left takes you to the Mirador (lookout) cerro Huaihuén, which offers a panoramic view of the town and bay of Ancud. |

This tour takes in part of the coastal range towards the Pacific Ocean. Follow routes 5 south towards Castro as far as Km 25 where there is a junction on the right leading to río Chepu. The trail runs by the river through a grand valley where skeleton trees rise from the waters by which they were inundated in the major earthquake of 1960. At Km 38 lies Puerto Anguay, situated on the estuary of the rivers Chepu and Anguay. This is a staring point for trips in Parque Nacional de Chiloé. Return by the same route to Ancud.

Take route 5 south for 18 km, on the left hand is a junction leading to Huillinco, land first settled by European colonists in 1895. Continue to the bay of Linao on the Inland Sea and to the north visiting the coastal villages. From here there are good views of the volcanoes Osorno, Calbuco, Yates and Hornopirén. Proceed towards Punta Chilén and Manao located on the peninsular separating the gulf of Hueihue from the bay of Manao. Both places have oyster farms open to the public on weekdays and have lovely sandy beaches. Continuing around the bay you will reach route 5 (Pan-American Highway) and can visit Chacao, notable for the design of its houses and church and the departure port for ferries to the mainland. Drive along the coast to the Bay of Caulin (an ideal place to arrive at lunchtime), finish up by returning to route 5 and Ancud.

Leave Ancud by the waterfront towards Lechagua and the Pacific Ocean. After14 km take the road to the left to visit Pumillahue and Puñihuil beach. Now return a little and take the gravel and sand track to the Playa de Mar Brava (21 Km. from Ancud) and Piedra Run. Circling the bay will lead you to a track that brings you back to the Ancud road. Optionally you can continue north to playa Guabún, where a white sandy beach is situated in an enclosed bay, good for swimming and picnicking. From here it is about 16 km to Fort Ahui, Corona lighthouse, and Yuste on a road in reasonable repair. To return to Ancud follow the road back around the gulf. On your return journey, visit the museum at Puente Quilo and Quetalmahue village.

Boat trips are available from Puñihuil and Quetalmahue. The road is sealed only as far as Quetalmahue.
