| The ground plan of Ancud does not follow the traditional pattern of such towns due to its irregular topography. A stream separates two hills. The fort was built on the northern hill and on the southern grew the civilian community, administration and businesses. The port, at the mouth of the stream, was divided between both parts of the town. Towards the end of the 18th century as a result of a catastrophic fire both sectors of the town were united on the southern side around the Plaza. Thus creating a mixture of public, and commercial buildings along with private dwellings all overlooked by the church. These buildings extended down the hill linking the centre to the port. On the northern hill the fort remained in isolation. |
