News GEF project approval The "Chiloé biodiversity, conservation and sustainability project" has just been approved by the World Environmental Fund. This four year project will promote a bioregional focus in order to manage the archipelago's forest resources. The idea behind this project is that the main causes of the loss of land will be better handled if the local communities, especially youth and women, have access to training programs and alternative income generating activities. Also, National Park forests will be managed together with the indiginous communities, in order to strenghten their decision-making power and the administrative process of the Park. Canada's General Governer's visit to Chiloé Canada's General Governer, Her Excellency Adrienne Clarkson, visited Chiloé on May 12th accompanied by a delegation of 60 people, to launch the 1st BMCh Initiatives Fair. During the fair, the Canadian team had the opportunity to appreciate some of the projets supported financially and technically by BMCh, related to the conservation and sustainable use of Chiloé's native forests by local communities. Insertion of the environmental topic in the new educational curriculum BMCh and the Educational Corporation of Castro held a workshop last June in order to add the environmental topic in the educational reform that is ongoing in all of Chile. The teachers of Chiloé, assisted by Chilean and Canadian consultants and employees of BMCh, designed an environmental program to be inserted in the new scholar structure. This activity has been realized in the optic of the future Educational Environmental Center of Chiloé. |
