Education In the rural communities of Chiloé the teachers play a key role even outside the school's walls. The expansive nature of their work allows them to spread new attitudes and behaviours among the children and their families, which is particularly important when it touches environmental matters. It is of Bosque Modelo Chiloé's opinion that education is the best way to discuss with the local population about the sustainable use of the natural resources of Chiloé. In that sense, it is of primary relevancy to support schools and colleges initiatives to implant a critical public conscience and to promote the best practices, so that arise a new behaviour towards the natural environment. The BMCh's educational projects are initiatives that come from Chiloé's teaching body. It is therefore through the teachers' motivation and the technical and financial help of BMCh that it has been possible to implement environmental education in the rural areas. Lucero: Project composed by three rural schools that represent three different ecosystems: agricultural, mixture of agricultural and forested, and fully forested. The initiative seeks to incorporate environmental education within the schools' program, through elements and tools fitted to the particularities of each one. For example, an ecological trail was built in Chanquín with 17 stations, in order for the students to enjoy field activities and learn about their natural environment. Santa Rosa: These three schools are trying to reintroduce the forestry activity in their respective area. A good example is the annexion of a marsh to the Escuela..., where an interpretation trail is being built to explain the forest interactions to the students. CEA: This important project aims to articulate different educational units, to create a working network, and to design politics regarding environmental education throughout the Province. Challenges BMCh would like to develop models in environmental education, to incorporate the successful experiences in the programs, and to oficially implement the Centre and make sure of its long-scale success. |
