Handicraft Chiloé's handicraft is the result of three factors: a strong cultural base, a wide variety of raw material of high quality, and the know-how and knowledge of the people. We find here a broad experience in wood use, which can be observed through the building of churches, houses and boats, and also in the carving of kitchen articles, combining artistic and practical characteristics. BMCh saw in the handicraft a good way to add value to the raw products that come from Chiloé's forests. Consequently, the families' income is increasing, when in the meantime the cultural knowledge and the practice of traditional works are preserved. Lemuy: The hands of expert women artisans transform the forest's vegetal fibbers in all kinds of baskets useful and decorative that are well accepted by the market. Escuela: This project allows to share experiences between Chiloé's well known artisanos and its new generations. The School teaches the most relevant aspects of the work as well as different techniques, and also gives history and Chiloé's culture classes. Petanes: A women's association created a small enterprise to produce marmalades from field berries, based on their knowledge of the natural environment, the forest ecosystem, and their personal experience. Challenge BMCh would like to strengthen the already formed groups, develop new product lines, incorporate new designs, increase the market, and replicate the initiatives. |
